Businesses Faced A Cyber Attack A Minute In 2019

According to data released by Beaming, UK businesses were hit with a cyber attack every 60 seconds in 2019.

Looking at its own data which included clients from across the UK, the Internet Service Provider discovered that organisations were hit by over half a million attempts by cyber criminals to gain access to their systems.

The average number of attacks aimed at a single business in 2019 was 576,575. This was a huge rise compared to the 281,094 instances that were recorded in 2018.

Sonia Blizzard, Beaming Managing Director, described 2019 as the “worst year on record” for cyber-attacks against UK firms, claiming that most were “completely indiscriminate.”

Beaming identified 1.8 million unique IP addresses responsible for the 2019 cyber attacks. With 18% of them being located in China. 7% were found in Brazil, 6% in Taiwan and 5% in Russia. Although this data doesn’t demonstrate where the hackers are, it shows how many compromised machines are in the country.

According to Beaming, the devices that cyber criminals most commonly targeted were security cameras and building control systems. These suffered 92,448 attacks in 2019, whilst 35,807 were targeted at file sharing applications as part of device admin tools.

Sonia Blizzard, added:

“Most business leaders, particularly at the smaller end of the spectrum, still don’t recognize the threat or incorrectly assume that their broadband router and antivirus systems will be sufficient to keep them safe.”

“With the number of companies falling victim to cyber crime increasing each year, it is clear that most need to do more to protect themselves. We advise businesses to put in place multiple layers of protection, use methods such as two-factor authentication, and to secure their data while it travels over the internet.”
