Northamptonshire Councils Hit By Cyber Attack
Wellingborough and East Northamptonshire Council were hit by a cyber attack last week, resulting in their systems going down for 24 hours.
The councils share a joint IT service between them, and in July internal auditors gave them limited assurances on their IT systems. The auditors also noted that cyber security issues could have a major organisational impact.
Due to the attack Councillors and staff changed their passwords in an effort to tighten security.
A council spokesman said:
“We could have accessed all systems but as a precautionary measure we restricted access for a short time to ensure there was no risk. No services to residents were affected. Our internal ICT team has carried out an investigation into this matter and follower the necessary measures to manage this.”
As more of these attacks are reported, what precautions are you taking to keep cyber criminals out?
